Reluctance to Change and the Comfort of the Status Quo
Change is hard. Even when we know it could make life easier, it still feels risky. For business owners, it’s easy to fall into the “I’ve always done it this way, and it’s worked so far” mindset. It’s familiar. It’s safe. And frankly, when your plate is already full, why add the stress of learning something new?
The trouble is, comfort with the status quo can quietly cost you time, money, and opportunity. You may be passing on systems or processes that could streamline operations, free up hours in your week, or open new revenue streams.
John Kotter, in his work on change management, points out that even positive change often triggers resistance, not because it’s bad, but because it’s unfamiliar. As business owners, that instinct to cling to what we know can keep us from seeing what’s possible.
The key is to challenge the “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” thinking. Instead, ask, “Could it be better?” A small, intentional shift, tested and refined, can lead to big improvements without overwhelming you.
Sometimes the biggest risk isn’t trying something new. It’s staying exactly where you are.
Until next time… be healthy, be happy, and live fully!
