Pain is a Distraction
Since Friday I have been experiencing the pain and distraction of a tooth abscess. Ever had one? Not fun, I assure you.
But pain, whatever the source, is a significant distraction from your most important things.
For me it led to 3 sleepless nights (so far) and the accumulated fatigue that comes with it. It led to my not being able to fully support my daughter at the U of A open house on Saturday, although I think I sucked it up pretty good to stay focused and supportive.
We had friends coming over for dinner that night and I almost called it off several times, only to not really enjoy myself because of the pain.
Then I cancelled attending a webinar and postponed a client session too. Simply unable to focus or think clearly.
Bottom line, I need to address the source of the pain. Done. Taking steps to alleviate and am all set for my appointment with a pair of pliers next week!
Now if this had started on a Monday or Tuesday my whole work week would have been impacted.
For me, this is a temporary thing. It will be addressed and a non issue after that. For many, perhaps you, pain is chronic or recurring and it does take a toll.
So, what pain distracts you?
- Low back pain
- Tension headaches or upper back and neck pain
- Arthritis pain
- Pain from an injury
- Pain from an illness
- Emotional pain manifesting physically
- Some other form of pain
However it currently manifests for you, whether acute and recent or chronic over weeks, months or even years and even if you convince yourself that it’s “minor”… take note of how it distracts and negatively impacts your life professionally or personally, and likely both. Be truthful with yourself.
- Does it impact your sleep?
- Does your productivity diminish?
- Do you find it hard to fully focus and be present?
- Can you not do things you normally love to do?
- Are you cranky with others, especially those close to you?
- Are you withdrawn and just want to be left alone?
Don’t disregard it and do nothing. Watch out for your inner voice saying things like “I don’t have time for this”, “suck it up, it’s not that bad”.
When pain distracts and you do not prioritize addressing it, you are self limiting the quality of your work, your life experience, and maybe your relationship with others. Know who is in these 3 groups of people and access them every time they are needed.
- Who are your professionals to diagnose and treat? (don’t simply rely on dr. google)
- Who is there to support emotionally and practically? (don’t dismiss the value of these people)
- Who can take over work when needed? (start now to redesign your business to operate fully even when you cannot)
Life’s too short and important to live it in pain, if you can avoid it.
Until next time… be get healthy, be happy, and live fully!
