Don't Pay For Summer Later

Here's how to reduce pain, sleep better, stay active, and keep your energy high all season long.

Summer has a way of reminding us what we love. Long evenings on the patio, golf rounds that stretch into sunset, road trips, camping, hiking, gardening, or travelling.

It's time with kids and grandkids. The freedom to simply be outside and enjoy life. For many people, summer feels like possibility.

Until the body starts sending different messages.

You wake up sore after activities that once felt easy. The round of golf leaves your back tight for two days. The long drive leaves your hips aching. You spend the weekend catching up on yard work only to need the next several days to recover.

And slowly, often without realizing it, people begin saying no to things they once loved.

Not because they want to. Because recovery has become part of the cost.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Here are four simple ways to enjoy summer now without paying for it later.

1. Don't Let Pain Decide Your Summer

Most people don't suddenly stop being active. They become a little more cautious. A little less spontaneous. A little less willing to say yes.

Pain and soreness have a way of shrinking our world.

You skip the hike because your knees have been bothering you. You turn down a bike ride because you know tomorrow will hurt. You think twice about gardening because you remember how stiff you felt last time.

Over time, those small decisions begin changing how we live. The goal isn't to pretend pain doesn't exist. It's to support your body so discomfort doesn't become the deciding factor.

That might mean easing back into activity. Stretching more regularly. Taking recovery seriously. Or exploring tools designed to reduce soreness and improve recovery.

This is one reason I've been introducing more people to LactiGo.

Not because it's magic. Because many active adults simply want to keep doing the things they love without paying such a heavy price afterward. When pain decreases and recovery improves, life tends to open back up.

2. Protect Your Sleep Like It's Part of the Adventure

Summer in Edmonton is one of my favourite times of year. The sun lingers late into the evening. There are bike rides after dinner. Walks along the river valley.

Conversations outside that somehow last longer than planned. I love all of it. But there's a tradeoff. Longer days can quietly disrupt sleep. And sleep is one of the most powerful recovery tools we have.

When sleep suffers, so does everything else:

  • Energy
  • Mood
  • Patience
  • Mental clarity
  • Physical recovery

Even our desire to be active.

A few small habits often make a big difference:

Create darkness earlier in the evening. Reduce bright lights and screens before bed. Keep a consistent bedtime. Make your bedroom cool, quiet, and dark.

None of these things are exciting. But they are powerful. Because summer is a lot more enjoyable when you're rested enough to experience it fully.

3. Move for Freedom, Not Fitness

Somewhere along the way, many people begin treating movement like a chore. Something to check off. Another item on the to-do list. But movement was never meant to be punishment. Especially as we get older.

The goal isn't necessarily to run marathons. It's to stay capable, to walk comfortably, carry luggage without pain, hike with your spouse, or chase grandchildren.

it's to explore a new city on vacation, to say yes when opportunities appear.

That's why I often encourage people to think about movement differently.

Not: "How fit do I need to become?"

But: "What kind of life do I want my body to support?"

For many people, simple is enough.

  • Walk more
  • Stretch regularly
  • Take the stairs
  • Ride your bike
  • Play pickleball
  • Garden

Move because it keeps life open. Because fitness is nice. Freedom is better.

4. Eat In A Way That Gives You More Life

Summer may actually be one of the easiest seasons to eat well. Fresh berries. Vegetables from the garden. Farmers' markets. Grilled meals shared with friends.

Eating well doesn't have to be complicated. And it certainly doesn't need to be perfect. The goal isn't restriction. It's nourishment.

Food that supports:

  • steady energy
  • recovery
  • healthy weight
  • reduced inflammation
  • better sleep
  • and long-term health

Ironically, some of the healthiest people I know aren't obsessed with food. They simply build habits that are sustainable. They enjoy meals. They eat intentionally. They allow food to support the life they want to live. Which feels very aligned with summer itself.

Health Isn't The Goal

The older I get, the more I believe this: Health isn't the goal. Health is what makes the rest of life possible. It's what allows you to travel, play, work well, explore, laugh longer around the fire table, climb mountains and keep saying yes to adventures.

At One Wave Life, that's really what we're trying to support.

Not perfection.

Not endless optimization.

Simply helping people stay active, capable, and engaged in the life they want to live.

Because the goal isn't to spend summer recovering from summer.

It's to feel well enough to enjoy every bit of it.

Be healthy. Be happy. Live intentionally.
